Two people died yesterday in a house fire near Valley, a community in the town of Forest, according to Vernon County Sheriff John Spears.

The names are not being released pending notification of the families.

The sheriff’s office had received two phone calls from citizens driving by the residence and reporting that a structure was fully engulfed and almost burnt to the ground. The first call was at 6:53 a.m.; and second, at 6:56 a.m.

The house was located off Valley Avenue, between Burr-Salem Road and County Highway P.

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office 911 Communications Center dispatched the Hillsboro Fire Department, the Hillsboro EMS and deputies from the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, which arrived on scene at 7:26 a.m.

Once the fire was contained and no longer a danger, responders determined that the house had been occupied at the time of the fire.

The La Farge Fire Department, the Wisconsin State Fire Marshal’s Office, Vernon County Emergency Management, and the Vernon County Coroner’s Office also assisted at the scene.

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Vernon County Coroner’s Office are investigating the incident.

Police are asking anyone who has information about this house fire or had driven past the residence on Sunday, July 31, or during the early morning hours of Monday, Aug. 1, before 6:53 a.m. to contact the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office at (800) 637-2123 or (608) 637-2124.
