Scenic Bluffs Community Health Centers in Norwalk and Cashton hosted their eighth annual health fair in August.
To increase ease of patient access, it was the second year that the organization expanded the program to take place both in Cashton and Norwalk, according to a press release prepared by Scenic Bluffs. Thirty-four patients took advantage of the free healthcare screenings offered to the public.
Many of the screenings focus on cancer prevention, such as oral, breast, and colorectal cancer. Though some of the screenings and tests are real-time inspections provided by staff, others must be sent out for laboratory testing. To keep this a free event, Scenic Bluffs has been looking for sponsors and partnerships to make these tests more affordable, according to the press release.
The Henry Schein Cares Foundation provided take-home Fit Kits, which screen for colorectal cancer. An organization that helps expand access to healthcare for underserved and at-risk populations around the world, Henry Schein Cares has been donating supplies to Scenic Bluffs throughout 2014 and will continue to do so over the next year.
The health fair is made possible by many collaborating staff members and organized by health educator Anne Heath, who has been with Scenic Bluffs for 18 years.
“I’ve always enjoyed planning for the health fair; it’s a great community resource that allows us to provide health education and valuable screening coverage for those who fall through the insurance gaps,” Heath said.
