Robert J. Weitzel, 57, of Middleton, Wis., drowned while attempting to complete a solo circumnavigation of Lake Superior by kayak on June 17, 2012.
Bob was a counselor at Glacier Creek Middle School in Cross Plains, Wis. He enjoyed adventure. He was an avid kayaker, cyclist, backpacker, songwriter/singer and essayist. Some of his accomplishments include biking across the United States and around Lakes Superior and Lake Huron. His current trip was dedicated to raising funds for Big City Mountaineers, a group that provides healing wilderness experiences for at-risk teens.
He is survived by his wife, Debra Zinke Weitzel; his father, George Weitzel of Cross Plains; his mother, Naomi Houseright of Karnak, Ill.; four sisters; a brother; and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will a celebration of his life for friends and family at the Capital Brewery, Middleton, at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 28. Memorials can be made to Big City Mountaineers.
