A man died today from injuries he had sustained in a UTV crash in Wilton, according to Monroe County police.

A rural Wilton man was driving a 2016 Polaris UTV westbound on Highway 71/Walker Street, near East Street, when the UTV crossed the centerline and struck a mailbox before striking an Alliant Energy pole. The utility pole snapped off, bringing down electrical wires. The UTV overturned onto its driver’s side and had to be put up right to free the operator.

The Monroe County 911 Communications Center received notification of the accident at 2:21 a.m.

Suffering life-threatening injuries, the operator of the UTV was transported to Tomah Memorial Hospital, though the Tomah Area Ambulance Service was requested to make an intercept for advanced life-saving care. The operator of the UTV succumbed to the injuries, however, and was pronounced dead at Tomah Memorial Hospital.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Wilton Ambulance Service, the Wilton Fire Department, the Tomah Area Ambulance Service, the Wisconsin State Patrol and the Monroe County 911 Communication Center.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the crash.
