Letter to the editor: We must take care of people who struggle

By KATHRYN O’GARA | Wilton

You wrote an excellent Back Talk regarding the militaristic interventions at the George Floyd protests and the Depression-era veterans’ protest over non-receipt of their bonus checks.

Military and Pinkerton intervention also took place numerous times during our country’s long labor union struggles. In one particularly gruesome episode, a shantytown of strikers and their families was burned and machine-gunned, causing the death of many men, women, and children.

I am providing a link to the series “Plutocracy,” which contains the history of the violent opposition to the struggles of labor, and also if I remember right, covers the veterans’ bonus protest.  It will make you sad, and it will make you think.  Plutocracy basically means government by the rich.  So what are we today, a democracy or a plutocracy?  I am a socialist/capitalist in the Franklin Roosevelt tradition.   We are free to make all the money we want, but we must also take care of those people who struggle.
