LaMont J. Zellmer, 75, of Tomah died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at Tomah Memorial Hospital.
He was born Dec. 23, 1935, to Alfred and Lillian (Gerke) Zellmer in Tomah. He started work at Steele Drug Store in Tomah before getting a job at the Combined Support Maintenance Shop (CSMS) at Camp Williams. He started at CSMS in 1960 and continued his entire career there, plus he continued to work for Steele Drug Store part time. He worked in the office at CSMS and retired as Senior Production Controller in 1992.
He also served for 38 years in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, all at Tomah, retiring as an E7.
LaMont was involved with many community activities, the American Legion, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, and the church choir for many years. He had an amazing “green thumb” and has grown some of the most beautiful flower gardens over the years. In June 2011, his garden was nominated as the Garden of the Month.
LaMont was the caregiver for his father until his death in 1993 and his mother until her death in December 2000.
He is survived by four brothers, Kurt (Elaine) Kelpe of San Angelo, Texas, Duane of Seffner, Fla., Bruce (Martha) of Woodbury, Minn., and Gary (Paula) of Marshfield, Wis.; beloved family members, Serena (Glen) Harris of Ohio and Charlette (Jerald) Benson and George Cattle of Minnesota; aunts and uncles, Frieda Gerke, Harry Isensee, Alpha Jean Gaede and Jenny Zellmer, all of Tomah, Norma Zellmer of Nekoosa, Wis., and Louise Luedkte of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; and many cousins, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sandra Perham; and a sister-in-law, Judy Zellmer.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 525 Superior Ave., Tomah. Pastor Donald R. Buch and Pastor David T. Brandt will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery, with military honors by the Grassman-Sowle-Larsen-Senz American Legion Post 201.
Relatives and friends are invited to call from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, 801 E. Monowau St., Tomah, and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.
