La Vern G. “Butch” Schreier, 70, of Cashton passed away suddenly Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017, at the farm where he was born.

He was born March 7, 1946, the ninth of 10 children born to Tony and Regina (Schaub) Schreier. He was raised on St. Mary’s Ridge, attended the St. Mary’s Ridge Catholic School for eight years, and graduated from Cashton High School with the class of 1964.

He was a licensed cheesemaker and worked at the Midway Co-op Cheese Factory from 1964 through 1987. From 1987 until his retirement in 2006, he owned and operated the Apple Village Liquor Store in La Crescent, Minn. In his retirement, he loved tinkering around the home farm, which he shared with his brother, Lambert, and providing transportation for his Amish neighbors. He particularly loved spending time with his nieces and nephews. He loved to golf and was very proud of the hole in one he achieved on Oct. 2, 2005, at the Snowflake Golf Course in Westby. He also was an avid sports fan.

He is survived by his siblings, Norbert, Donald (Judith) and Lambert, all of Cashton, and Geraldine (James) Schiller and Rita (Lowell) Verkler, both of Sparta. He also is survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Regina; and his siblings and in-laws, Julia and Peter Leis, Dorothy Schreier, Paul and Agnes Schreier, Darlene and Awalt Wolfe, and Coletta Schreier.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church on St. Mary’s Ridge. Father Michael Klos will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
