John Charles Fisher, 84, of Twin Lakes, Wis., passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
The son of the late Harry and Mary Whalen Fisher, he was born Feb. 2, 1926, in Shullsburg, Wis. On April 19, 1952, he was united in marriage to Donnafae Russell in Dubuque, Iowa.
John attended St. Matthew’s Grade School and Shullsburg High School and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He served in the U.S. Army as a Tech-4 from May 18, 1944, until he was discharged on June 16, 1946. He was stationed in Germany and France, receiving the Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two Bronz Battle Stars, three Overseas Service Bars, the Army of Occupation Medal – Germany and the Good Conduct Medal.
Upon returning home from service, John became a schoolteacher at Norwalk High School in Norwalk, Salem-Central High School in Paddock Lake, Wis., for 10 years, and Randall Consolidated Grade School in Randall Township, Wis., for 17 years, retiring in 1985.
He was an active member of the Twin Lakes American Legion Post 544 in Twin Lakes and a member of St. John’s Catholic Church.
John was a coach at all of his schools and loved all kinds of sports. He was a baseball coach at Salem-Central and a Lakeland Little League coach for many years. He also coached the Randall Grade School basketball team for many years and really enjoyed all of the good basketball teams he had at Randall. John was an avid St. Louis Cardinal and Green Bay Packers fan. He enjoyed time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
John is survived by his wife, Donnafae (Fae) Fisher; two sons, Daniel (Tura) Fisher of Trevor, Wis., and Stephen (Pam) Fisher of Camp Lake, Wis.; four daughters, Terri (Scott) Morton of Twin Lakes, Wis., Diane (Steve) Banas of Cedarburg, Wis., Marcia (Donald) Payson of Paddock Lake, Wis., and Marilyn Grubbs of Walworth, Wis.; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Jeanne Sauer of La Crosse; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Mary Fisher; two brothers, Edward and James; and four sisters, Margaret Mulcahy, Catherine Probst, Delores O’Donnell and Alice Solberg.
A Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, Jan. 5, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Twin Lakes, with internment with military honors at St. John’s Cemetery.
