After capturing conference titles May 17, Brookwood and Royall track and field athletes looked toward achieving regional titles May 23 and advancing to sectionals.
The Brookwood boys and girls teams made school history at the Scenic Bluffs Conference meet at New Lisbon. Both teams were able to capture team titles, a first to happen for the program. The Brookwood boys team hasn’t won the team conference title since 1990.
Perhaps the boys team’s most stellar performance came from Franklin Wildes, who captured first in the 110-meter hurdles (16.60), the 300-meter hurdles (43.32), and the long jump (19-10.25). Wildes additionally placed second in the triple jump (40-06.00), resulting in 38 points for the Brookwood boys.
Senior Dan Peterson edged the competition with first-place finishes in both the 200-meter dash (23.56) and the 400-meter dash (52.23), along with a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.58).
Other top-five finishers for the Brookwood boys were sophomores Wyatt Maurhoff (2:10.98) and Owen Radloff (2:12.94) in second and third, respectively, in the 800-meter run. Maurhoff additionally came in second (5:25.48) and junior Dylan Powell in third (5:27.12) in the 1,600-meter run, plus freshman Brayden Thieman was second (11:30.77) and freshman Marshall Doll was fourth (12:41.15) in the 3,200-meter run. Doll placed fourth (53.57) and sophomore Brady Hansen placed fifth (54.19) in the 400-meter dash, and Maurhoff was fourth (5-06.00) in the high jump.
Each of the Brookwood boys relays placed significantly, resulting in fourth place for the 400-meter relay (53.04), 800-meter relay (1:46.67), and 1,600-meter relay (4:06.84). The 3,200-meter relay placed fifth at 11:37.79.
Together, the Brookwood boys team racked up a total of 151 team points to finish 6 points ahead of second-place Cashton (145) and 15 points ahead of third-place New Lisbon (136) in the final standings.
Additional boys team standings were Bangor (88) in fourth, Hillsboro (34) in fifth, Royall (30) and Necedah (30) in a tie for sixth, and Wonewoc-Center (14) in eighth.
Brookwood wins eight events
The Brookwood girls found a number of successes, capturing titles in eight events and gaining 166 points for the first conference title in seven seasons.
Senior McKenzie Woods swept the girls’ hurdles with first place in both the 100-meter hurdles (17.04) and the 300-meter hurdles (49.47). Woods further contributed a first-place finish in the girls 1,600-meter relay (4:35.05), along with senior Lainey Teynor, junior Katie Gruen and sophomore Amelia Mullenberg. Gruen, junior Alexis Lacy, junior Yareni Cruz and freshman Alice Wiedmeyer came away with a first-place finish in the 3,200-meter relay (11:22.40) as well.
The team of junior Taylor Freed, freshman Savanna Groom-Cruz, senior Kristen Berg and junior Cora Brandau finished first in the 800-meter relay (1:58.65) while also placing third in the 400-meter relay (36.34).
Cora Brandau additionally placed first in both the shot put (32-05.25) and discus throw (104-06) events.
Senior Kimberlee Downing came in first in the 800-meter run (2:32.08) while also placing third in the 3,200-meter run (12:46.76) and fourth in the 1,600-meter run (5:49.50).
Other top-five finishes for the Brookwood girls were Sophie Teynor in fifth in both the 100-meter dash (14.02) and the 200-meter dash (29.61); Lainey Teynor in third (1:03.82) and Muellenberg in fourth (1:04.93) in the 400-meter dash; Lainey Teynor in fourth (2:39.42) and Muellenberg in fifth (2:41.79) in the 800-meter run; Margarita Silva in third in the 1,600-meter run (5:45.97); Silva in second (12:45.17) and Lacy in fifth (14:14.27) in the 3,200-meter run; Gruen in fourth (54.26) and Emily O’Rourke in fifth (55.39) in the 300-meter hurdles; and Mackenzie Schlafer (29-04.50) in third in the shot put.
Altogether, the Brookwood girls kept a large number of points at bay ahead of second-place Bangor (146.5) and third-place Cashton (140). Royall captured fourth place with 109 points; Hillsboro (32), fifth; New Lisbon (28.5), sixth; Wonewoc-Center (4), seventh; and Necedah (2), eighth.
Royall’s Gruen wins four events
Marah Gruen led the way for the Royall girls team, placing first in all four of her events to capture the conference titles in the girls 1,600-meter run (5:34.34), 3,200-meter run (12:06.23), long jump (17-04.00) and triple jump (34-04.50).
Behind Gruen’s 40 points, the Royall girls accrued 109 total points to finish in fourth overall.
Other top-five individual finishers for the Panthers included senior Addy Saunders in second (4-08.00) and senior De’Yona Jones in third (4-06.00) in the high jump; senior Kalin Marshall in second (29-08.25) and junior Jessie Wohlrab in fifth (29-00.50) in the shot put; Marshall in second (90-00) in the discus throw; and Jones in fourth (17.83) in the 100-meter hurdles.
In the relays, the team of Delaney Salm, Ashlin Lukas, Ava Saemisch and Alice Palamaruk placed second in both the 400-meter relay (55.83) and the 800-meter relay (1:59.20) for the Panthers.
Royall’s Young takes first in discus
For the Royall boys, senior Jadyn Young gained a conference title by placing first in the discus throw (113-07), while also coming in third in the shot put (41-03.00). Rodrigo Garcia (18:00.25) placed fifth in the long jump for the Panthers. The Royall boys placed fifth overall with 30 points.
Division 3 meet
Track and field athletes competed in the Division 3 Kickapoo regional meet May 23 in Viola, with the top fourth-place finishers advancing to the Division 3 Mondovi sectional May 26 in Mondovi.
Brookwood’s Franklin Wildes placed first in the boys 110-meter hurdles (16.68) and 300-meter hurdles (44.22), second in triple jump (41-07.00), and second in the 1,600-meter relay (3:36.08), along with Marshall Doll, Wyatt Maurhoff and Dan Peterson.
Wildes broke the school record in the triple jump, set in 2010 by Brock Giese, with a jump of 41-06.00. The boys 1,600-meter relay also broke the school record, which was set in 2015 in a time of 3:37.40 by Dylan Smith, Jared Johnson, Devan Summerfield and Billy Nusse. The same quartet (Wildes, Doll, Maurhoff and Peterson) first broke the record at the Sparky Reynolds Invitational in Boscobel on May 12 in a time of 3:37.29, and the new time now sits at 3:36.08.
Senior Dan Peterson will additionally look toward a sectional birth with advancing in the boys 200-meter dash (23.92) in third and the 400-meter dash (52.27) in first.
Freshman Brayden Thieman will make his first sectional appearance after placing fourth in the 1,600-meter run (5:31.06). Also, Thieman placed fifth in the 3,200-meter run (11:11.86), just missing advancing on to sectionals.
The boys 3,200-meter relay will vye for a top-spot at sectionals after placing second (8:44.12) with runners Wyatt Maurhoff, Dylan Powell, Owen Radloff and Marshall Doll.
Royall’s Rodrigo Garcia will advance on to sectionals with a third-place finish in the boys 400-meter dash (54.24). Garcia also placed fifth in the boys long jump (17-08.50). Jadyn Young just missed sectionals with fifth-place finishes in shot put (41.00.50) and discus throw (109-06).
Marah Gruen will compete at sectionals after capturing first in the girls 1,600-meter run (5:29.50), 3,200-meter run (12:06.63) and triple jump (35-00.00) for Royall. Gruen also placed second in the long jump (15-09.00).
De’Yona Jones also will join a sectional showing, securing a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (17.59). Addy Saunders also advances in the girls high jump in fourth (4-10.00), and Kalin Marshall will travel to Mondovi after capturing second in the girls shot put (30-01.00), as well as the discus throw (99-03).
For the Brookwood girls, McKenzie Woods earned first in the 100-meter hurdles (16.72) and 300-meter hurdles (50.42). Cora Brandau placed first in the shot put (30-10.00) and third in discus throw (93-09).
In the 400-meter dash, Amelia Muellenberg (1:05.06) placed third and Lainey Teynor (1:05.06) placed fourth. Margarita Silva (5:57.10) in the 1,600-meter run and Kimberlee Downing (12:38.51) in the 3,200-meter run both placed second. Silva also advances in the 3,200-meter run with a fourth-place finish at 13:00.60.
The girls 1,600-meter relay, consisting of Lainey Teynor, McKenzie Woods, Katie Gruen and Amelia Muellenberg, captured second place at 4:25:89. The 3,200-meter relay additionally advances in first with a time of 10:08.65 by Teynor, Muellenberg, Silva, and Downing.
Kickapoo-La Farge gave way to first place for the girls with 159 points, and Brookwood placed second (118); Cashton, third (98); Royall, fourth (91); Luther, fifth (85); Bangor, sixth (57); New Lisbon, seventh (34); Hillsboro, eighth (17); Providence Academy, ninth (10); Wonewoc-Center, 10h (4); and Necedah, 11th (2).
Luther captured the boys regional title with 155 points as New Lisbon placed second with 115 points. Cashton rounded out third with 106 points. Brookwood and Kickapoo/La Farge tied for fourth place at 77 points, with Bangor (59) in sixth, Hillsboro (28) in seventh, Necedah (25) in eighth, Royall (21) in ninth, and Wonewoc Center (14) in 10th.
