Dairy breakfasts have seen changes

It’s been about a year and a half since auctioneer Bob Brandau of rural Wilton departed this life and now is presumably pitting one bidder against another in heaven, where enthusiastic buyers with good checks or cash never end.

It has been a very long time since I thought about church camp. Yes, I know many readers will find it hard to believe that this cynical but bleeding-heart liberal actually went to church camp.

The many permutations of ‘A Christmas Carol’

    December 24th, 2021

I must have been about 7 when I was given a quarter for the Saturday afternoon matinee at the Goetz Theater in Monroe, Wis. “A Christmas Carol” was playing, and I found it so frightening that I might well have wet my pants, although I don’t think I did.

Tons of treasures could be found at Trail’s End (‘Amish Walmart’)

As I headed home from La Crosse on Saturday, and after passing through Portland, I saw a huge plume of black smoke fill the eastern sky. It appeared to be a fire in Cashton, and though I drove slowly, paying careful attention, I could no longer spot the smoke once I was in Cashton.

If you have a taste for fresh shrimp, Brunswick, Ga., may be the place to be. All I know about shrimping is what I learned from the movie “Forrest Gump” when Tom Hanks hooks up with Gary Sinise to run a shrimp boat.

No, it’s not your imagination. Ontario has looked like a sad case for some time now. Yes, it was three years ago in August when the Kickapoo taught us all a lesson about the power of an angry mother nature to shake up our understanding of what is a 100-year or 500-year flood.

There are times when it appears the Wisconsin legislature is made up of such dullards that they really ought to come with a warning label on their foreheads: “Hazardous to human health.”

My sympathy goes to Francis Bellamy, a writer who never received any financial reward or even much recognition for his work.

What has Facebook, other social media cost us?

    October 7th, 2021
    by

Sunday marked the first day of National Newspaper Week, and, appropriately enough, on Monday, Facebook and its associate, Instagram, went down, leaving millions of social media addicts in the throes of serious withdrawal. On Tuesday the company admitted it was not the victim of hacking, but it was its own monkeying around that caused the six-hour outage. Aw, darn.
