One of the few known photos of the construction of the Chicago North Western rail line between Elroy and Sparta, this is believed to depict the area to the west of tunnel No. 3 (between Norwalk and Sparta), where possibly horse-drawn equipment is being used to fill the grade. The line opened in 1873.
