The driver of an Amish buggy was knocked unconscious in a hit-and-run collision with a tanker truck on Highway 33 in the town of Jefferson on Nov. 16, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
At about 4:44 p.m., Jacob A. Ketelsen, 29, of Viroqua was driving the tanker truck westbound about one-half mile north of Oklahoma Avenue when he ran into the back of rural Cashton resident Ruben L. Miller’s buggy, and then kept going. The same day, police found Ketelsen, who said he thought he had hit a deer.
Emergency personnel reported that Miller, 49, had been unconscious when they had arrived. Severely injured, the horse had to be put down at the scene. When police arrived, Miller had regained consciousness and was standing.
Ketelsen had been driving a white 1994 Freightliner tanker, a variety used to haul manure.
Both the buggy and the truck were extensively damaged. During an investigation, Ketelsen was arrested for hit-and-run, causing injury, and operating with a commercial driver’s license and taken to Monroe County Jail. His bond setting will be Monday, Nov. 20.
The Monroe County 911 Communications Center, the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Cashton Fire Department, the Cashton First Responders and the Tri-State Ambulance Service assisted the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
