Howard R. Vieth, 95, of Middleton, Wis., passed away Saturday, July 16, 2011, at Middleton Village Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
The son of Harry and Verna (Hubbard) Vieth, he was born Jan. 11, 1916, in Norwalk. Howard married Esther Theuer on June 7, 1941, in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Spring Valley School and graduated from Norwalk High School in 1931 and North Central College in Naperville, Ill., in 1938. Howard continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and earned his master’s degree in education.
He taught in Shullsberg, Juneau and Fond du Lac prior to joining the U.S. Navy in March 1943. Howard worked in communications and was stationed in Bainbridge Island, Wash., on the HMS Ceres, Cherbourg, France, and in Hawaii. He was discharged in 1946 as a lieutenant (JG).
Howard returned to teaching at Sheboygan North High School, and he was appointed assistant principal in 1961, retiring in 1982.
He was an active member of Fountain Park United Methodist Church in Sheboygan and a member of various committees of the Wisconsin Conference of United Methodist Church. Howard enjoyed coaching football and traveling, especially during his retirement. He moved to Middleton in 2002.
Howard is survived by his daughters, Carol Vieth of Chicago and Ellen (Larry) Sheaffer of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; a son, Gordon (Rohini) Vieth of Wichita, Kan.; three grandchildren, Matthew (Peg) Sheaffer, Andrew (Jessica) Sheaffer and Samina Vieth; three great-grandchildren, Avery, Laurel and Ruby Sheaffer; a brother, Ivan Vieth; and many nieces, nephews, other relative and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther; his sister, Myrtle Griffin; his sister-in-law, Shirley Vieth; and his brother-in-law, Gene Griffin.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, Aug. 10, at the Salem United Methodist Church, County Hwy. T, Norwalk. Burial will be Wanderers Rest Cemetery in Norwalk. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to United Methodist Children’s Services, 3940 Lisbon Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53208.
