To combat drunken driving, the Ontario Police Department, Norwalk Police Department and Wilton Police Department is joining other law enforcement agencies in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” national campaign, which will run through Jan. 1.

The campaign began Dec. 15.

According to a press release prepared by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “The goal is not to arrest more drunken drivers. The goal is to deter drunken driving, so that we can reach our ultimate goal of zero preventable traffic deaths.

“Although drunken driving is 100 percent preventable, on average someone is killed or injured in an alcohol-related crash in Wisconsin every three hours. Last year there were 190 people killed and nearly 2,900 injured, according to the Wisconsin DOT.”

The press release continues:

“These statistics are preventable by making good choices:

•Choose a sober designated driver before you start drinking.

• If you’re feeling buzzed, you likely are over the 0.08 BAC limit and should not drive.

• Some taverns and restaurants have programs to provide patrons with a safe ride home. Visit www.tlw.org/ and click on ‘Safe Ride.’

• Report impaired drivers to law enforcement by calling 911.”
