Bernard “Bernie” Johnson, 74, of Janesville died Friday, Nov. 4, 2016, at home.
He was born on July 2, 1942, in Wilton, the son of Barney and Gertrude (Duane) Johnson. Bernie served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War. He married Mary Jane Stillwell on June 6, 1964, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tomah. Bernie was retired from GMAD in 2003 after many years of service in the Heavy Duty Repair Department. He was a member of the Wilton American Legion, UAW Local 95 Retirees and the Peace Trail Coalition.
Bernie enjoyed walking his two dogs several miles on the trail every day. Bernie also enjoyed playing pool with his grandson. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards with his friends. He was never hesitant to lend a helping hand.
Bernie is survived by his loving wife of more than 52 years, Mary; his daughters, Ann (Al) Lien of San Diego and Linda Toledo of Miami; three grandchildren, Meghan (Blake) Hansen of Janesville, Mollie (Willie Rommel) Brady of West Salem and Mark (Jordan Hawkinson) Brady of Janesville; a sister, Pattie (James) Corr of San Antonio, Calif.; a brother, Mark (Shirley) Johnson of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; several nieces, nephews other relatives and friends; and his faithful chocolate labs, Cooper and Sparkey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Barney and Gertrude.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established.
