Bernice A. Schumacher, 91, of Black River Falls, Wis., and formerly of the Melvina area died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015, in her home in the town of Adams in Jackson County.
Bernice was born Nov. 14, 1923, in Richy, Mont., to William and Leona (Heintz) Von Ruden. At the age of 5, her family moved to Melvina. She graduated from Cashton High School, and she married Wilfred Schumacher in Cashton on June 28, 1945. The couple farmed in the Norwalk area. Wilfred preceded Bernice in death on Nov. 1, 1989.
Bernice moved to Black River Falls in 1995 to be closer to some of her family. She worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Sparta, C. B. Rich Company in La Crosse, and Northern Engraving in Sparta. She was a member of St. Mary’s Ridge Catholic Church and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Black River Falls. Bernice enjoyed sewing, embroidering, gardening, baking, and playing cards.
Surviving are four sons, Owen (Diane) Schumacher of Norwalk, Jerome “Jerry” (Nancy) Schumacher of Black River Falls, Wis., Paul (Maureen) Schumacher of Turtle Lake, Wis., and Robert (Anna) Schumacher, Vaughn, Mont.; two daughters, Karen (Robert) Brown of Black River Falls and Marian (Arlen) Verwiebe of Melrose, Wis.; two brothers, Richard (Phyllis) Von Ruden of La Crosse and William Von Ruden of Sparta; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two grandsons, Dominic Kruse and Todd Schumacher; and four sisters, Luella Dockendorf, Marie Forest, Elreda Zimmerman and an infant twin sister to Marie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Black River Falls. Services will be conducted by Rev. Emmanuel Famiyeh. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5–7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Buswell Funeral Home (715-284-2231), 106 S. Second St., Black River Falls, WI, and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
