Darell “Speed” H. Verwiebe, 76, of Janesville passed away peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at Mercy Hospital & Trauma Center.

The son of Herbert and Norma (Popp) Verwiebe, he was born in Sparta on June 6, 1936. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kendall. Darell graduated from Kendall High School in 1954, and served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960 at Fort Benning, Ga.

He met and married the love of his life, Vera A. Keller, on Dec. 6, 1964, in Janesville. Their marriage was blessed with a daughter Beth in 1965 and a son Darin in 1968. Darell worked 44 years for General Motors in Janesville before retiring in 1999. They retired to their lake home near Boulder, Wis., before moving to a condominium at Cedar Crest on Aug. 6, 2011. He enjoyed flying, camping, fishing, traveling and reading.

He is survived by his wife, Vera Verwiebe; his daughter, Beth (Duane) Davidson of Poynette, Wis.; his son, Darin (friend Marsha) Verwiebe of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; his beloved grandchild, Zachary Darell Davidson; his step-grandsons, Duane and Lucas Davidson; his mother, Norma Verwiebe of Tomahawk, Wis.; his brother, Gale (Anne) Verwiebe of Mayville, Wis.; and dear nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father and a step-grandson, Daniel.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at Peace Lutheran Church, Janesville, with Rev. Richard Lehmann officiating, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. A visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Private family interment will be in South Ridge Cemetery, Kendall.
