Wolves finish season sweep of Panthers

By NATE BEIER | For the County Line

The Royall softball team has struggled to maintain success this season despite notching some key victories along the way.

Despite sweeping New Lisbon last week (9–8 on Monday, 5–0 on Tuesday), the team couldn’t find a way to force a season split with Wonewoc-Center Monday, falling 6–2 to the Wolves.

“We were slow, and the morale seemed low,” said head coach Josh Board. “Here is a perfect example: they were up in the bottom of the second with bases loaded, nobody out and did not score. Now how often does that happen in this game? The only two people congratulating the team were Coach (Ryan) Witt and myself. That should have been a momentum swing and we should have jumped at that opportunity.”

Royall wasn’t able to seize the chance at the plate, as the team mustered just a pair of hits in the loss. Kaylin Gruen and Kirsten Lunde both singled.

Wonewoc-Center’s Shelby Justman took the complete game win, allowing two hits, striking out five and walking five. Cheyenne Harris took the loss for Royall after pitching 3 1/3 innings, giving up six hits, four strikeouts and three walks. Molly Olson finished the game giving up one hit, two strikeouts, and one walk.

Royall will travel to Necedah on Thursday for its final conference contest. The Panthers enter the meeting 6–7 in league play.

Regionals

Royall will travel to Elmwood/Plum City for a Division 5 softball regional semifinal game on May 21.

Coach Board said, “I am excited to go to Elmwood/Plum City. I absolutely love being the underdog and have the opportunity to play different teams and see what we can do. I would compare them to a Cashton or Bangor squad, maybe a touch better. Their pitcher doesn’t have a lot of strikeouts, which tells me their defense is solid.”

The EPC Wolves finished fourth in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference. Glenwood City won the DSC with a 15–1 record, while Elk Mound was the runner-up.
