South Side News for Oct. 24

By MYRNA FAUSKA

Here we are past the middle of October already and looking forward to the Kendall Holiday Fair in the community hall on Friday, Nov. 8. The date has been changed from what it had been previous years, when the fair was held the first weekend in November. This year it will be only one day, and we hope there will be a good turnout for the many vendors who have signed up. Our Free Church Women’s Ministries table will be in front of the stage as in the past, and we will sell Rada cutlery, along with baked goods and crafts. We hope to see you there.

In the meantime, we do have a few items of interest from the past week to report. First, I finally found out when our neighbor’s grandson Logan Dean Schumann was born, and it was Oct. ”0. On Tuesday the county nurses were at the Kendall Senior Dining Center, so my husband Dave and I went down and had our flu shots. We saw a few relatives and several friends there, including Lynette Vlasak and Sally Dana. From there, we went to Tomah to do some shopping and attend the Parkinson’s Support Group at Tomah Health. On Friday evening, I attended the Kendall Public Library’s showing of the movie “Tall Tales: The Unbelievable Adventure” at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church fellowship hall.

Jim and Mary Parkhurst joined Don and Donna De Witt for supper at Mauston China Buffet on Tuesday afternoon. On Friday, the Parkhursts were with Ron and Arlene Garvens as they dined at Elroy’s Valley Inn. On Saturday morning, Jim’s nephew Dwaine Ulrich and friend of Rockford, Ill., stopped in for a visit while they were in the area to see the fall colors.

Ron and Arlene Garvens enjoyed a visit early in the week when Bob and Gladys Roszkowski of Eagle, Wis., arrived at noon Monday. The two couples headed to Gays Mills in the afternoon for apples and came home through Viroqua, where the gals shopped for quilting materials. On Tuesday the foursome drove to Wisconsin Rapids and Plover, Wis., where the quilters visited more quilt shops while the guys checked out the hardware stores. On Wednesday the visitors headed back home.

The Chip Marty family and the Rachel Zellmer family had a busy weekend at their parents Lowell and Arlys Zellmer’s home in Johnnycake Hollow, where they were cleaning up the property for the fall and having a family autumn get-together and party. On Saturday morning, Chip and Mary attended the wedding of Sid Thayer and Marie Gosda at St. Luke’s Historic Church on the east side of the neighborhood.

After getting their shots at the Kendall Senior Dining Center on Tuesday, Sally Dana stayed for lunch and Lynette Vlasak brought her meal back to the Kendall Public Library. In the evening, the gals attended the Kendall Lions monthly meeting at Fireball Bar, Grill and Lanes. On Wednesday Sally, played mahjong with her group, and then joined Lynette for a trip to La Crosse for shopping and supper at Olive Garden. On Friday night, they hosted movie night at St. John’s, and on Sunday the gals attended the visitation for Alvin Cook at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Even though the fall colors in our area haven’t rivaled those we see in the Our Wisconsin magazine, we have been able to enjoy some of them as we travel around the countryside. Despite this year’s lack of October’s bright colors, we are blessed to live in this climate, where we can enjoy the changing of the seasons. Each season has something for us to enjoy, some years more so than others. Late autumn is just around the corner, and soon we’ll welcome the deer hunters, celebrate Thanksgiving and look forward to the anniversary of the birth of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, without whom our whole lives would be meaningless. Amen.
