Every week we see more signs of spring even though the weather doesn’t want to cooperate. The leaves on our oak trees are the size of a squirrel’s ear, which is a sign that it is time to plant corn. Other signs are the wood violets and morels. Now, if the farmers can squeeze in their fieldwork between the torrents of rain, they should have a good crop this year if the rest of the season behaves.
It is a joy to travel the highways and byways and see the redbud trees blooming along the way and the apple trees and wild plums with their white blossoms. Here at the Feisty Fauskas’, it has been a quiet week except for a few jaunts into town for shopping and appointments.
Up the valley, Ron and Arlene Garvens and Carol Gross had a quilt-shopping trip Tuesday, checking out a few places the gals had heard about. On Wednesday, Arlene went to Waukesha, Wis., to spend a day with her sister Alice Naber and have lunch in Brookfield at Champs Restaurant, which they highly recommend if you are ever in that area. They were home the next day, and on Friday evening, they picked up Jim and Mary Parkhurst and went to Elroy for fish supper at Valley Inn.
Allan Vlasak aged another year Wednesday, and Chip and Mary Marty hosted a party for him that evening. His sister Arlys and hubby Lowell Zellmer provided the meal, and his wife Heather helped him celebrate, along with his sister Lynette Vlasak and Sally Dana. If you want to know how old he is, ask him. He’s nine years younger than me, if that tells you anything.
At noon Wednesday, Sally Dana lunched at the Dining Center in Kendall and attended the birthday club. Lynette Vlasak was at the Cotter Pin in Leon, lunching with Carol Fronk, Cheryl Neitzel, Luann Huber, Rita Yahnke, and Betty Boeder. On Friday morning, Lynette had breakfast in Mount Horeb, Wis., with former colleagues, and in the evening, she and Sally Dana supped with Lori Cherf at Bender’s Family Restaurant in Elroy. On Saturday, Sally went to La Crosse, where she attended a memorial service for John Jakes at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Alumni Center.
Chip and Mary Marty spent the weekend at Champion’s Resort near Galesville while Layla, Brett and Mya enjoyed those days at The Ranch in Johnnycake Hollow with Grandpa and Grandma Lowell and Arlys Zellmer. A good time was had by all.
It’s hard to believe that Monday is already Memorial Day. We are looking forward to the events at the east end of the neighborhood at St. Luke’s Historical Church. At 10 a.m., the Kendall American Legion will honor the veterans buried in the cemetery and afterward, there will be a service in the church, with Lance Corporal Samuel Guilfoil of the United States Marine Corps Reserves leading the worship. Samuel is the grandson of Ted Harris, one of the veterans buried there. The St. Luke’s Auxiliary will host a potluck luncheon after the service. All are invited to share in this special occasion to praise the Lord and thank Him for the sacrifices of these young heroes and honor those who are still with us. God bless America!
