August is upon us, and despite the pandemic, those of us on the south side of the town of Glendale are keeping on keeping on. Esther Vlasak once lived in the neighborhood and is now on the east end of the township. She is celebrating her 95th birthday next Sunday, Aug. 9. Our area seems to be a healthy place to live, with all of the nonagenarians celebrating their natal anniversaries. Esther’s family is looking forward to this milestone in her life.
If you were wondering where this column was last week, it was nonexistent due to the writer spending the weekend with hubby Dave in Barron, Wis., with cousin Louise Kaus and her offspring, celebrating grandson Nathan Kaus’ graduation from Barron High School. By the time we got home on Monday, the deadline for the news was past.
On Saturday, Jim and Mary Parkhurst’s granddaughter Erin and friend Andy brought their baby daughter Kiai with them from Indianapolis and stayed until Tuesday. On Wednesday, Randy Parkhurst of Orfordville, Wis., spent the day with his parents.
Allan Vlasak joined his sister Lynette with Sally Dana on Saturday for a trek to Wisconsin Dells to watch great-nephew Olin Zellmer play baseball.
On Monday, Lynette Vlasak and Sally Dana met Mariane Weidenbach in Viroqua, and then went to Westby, where they lunched at Borgen’s Café. On Wednesday, Sally joined Carol Fronk, Cheryl Neitzel and Eileen Richie for a game of mahjong. On Thursday, Lynette and Sally were in Elroy to see great-nephew Brett Marty play baseball, and on Friday evening, they enjoyed fish fry from Fireball Bar and Lanes.
Although our pastor, Bob Waschek, retired at the end of June, he is still in the area, and last Sunday, he led our service at Evangelical Free Church of Kendall. The congregation feted him and his family with farewell gifts, honoring his past 30 years of serving our little flock. He will be missed when he moves to Iowa, and we all hope he will be back to visit. Our congregation has grown spiritually under his guidance, and we are now looking forward to new blessings as we join with the Orthodox Presbyterian Church to worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
