Shawn Paul Goodman, 44, of Fredericksburg, Va., passed away Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018.

Shawn was born March 3, 1973, in Sparta to Gary D. Goodman and Alicia M. O’Rourke.

After graduating from West Bloomfield (Mich.) High School in 1991, Shawn attended Oakland University for two years. He served in the U.S. Air Force at Travis AFB for four years and received an honorable discharge in 1997. He was a semi driver for a number of years, including a 1-1/2-year tour as a contractor in Iraq. In January 2012, he began employment in the transportation department at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lexington, Ky. He worked there until shortly before his death.

Shawn will be remembered as a kind, caring person who was always willing to give a helping hand.

Survivors include his father, Gary D. Goodman; his new family, stepmom Kaye, stepbrothers Greg Zaletel (Dave Rohde) and Andy Zaletel (Beth), stepsister Jodi Wadge (Greg), nephews Jordan Wadge, Tysen Wadge and Tommy Zaletel, and niece Abbey Zaletel; his dog, Millie; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Alicia M. O’Rourke; an uncle Tim O’Rourke; and a cousin, Daniel O’Rourke.

A service will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Shawn to the National Institute of Mental Health or to a local mental health organization of one’s choice.
