The Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton School District’s winter sports season is slated to begin, Superintendent Travis Anderson told the County Line on Tuesday.
The district based its decision on WIAA recommendations and guidelines, he said.
“We are working with our conference schools to develop a safe and healthy way to hold winter sports,” Anderson wrote in an email. “We believe that with all of the mitigation and sanitation practices we have in place in our school building, that winter sports can take place safely.”
He continued, “We want to ensure the mental health and well-being of our students is always at the forefront with all of our decisions, and recent studies have shown that extracurricular activities are having small impacts on the spread of Covid-19 due to the small cohorts of participants. We all understand there are still risks involved, but we will take extra precautions to ensure the health and safety of our students and spectators.”
N-O-W students returned to in-person instruction Monday after an upswing in cases and quarantines earlier this month. Elementary students were virtual for one week; and junior and senior high, two weeks.
As of Monday, N-O-W had one new positive case among the teaching staff and one among the bus drivers.
“Both are from community exposure as far as it can be determined,” Anderson said.
Additionally, one support staff member and one teacher were quarantined due to close contact with a positive. Both results were non-school-related. The district was able to fill the positions.
N-O-W had no active positive cases among students as of Monday.
