I just finished reading your Backtalk column on Ontario’s historic community hall. Wow, did the memories ever come flooding back (bad term under the circumstances?). It was in that building where I played my first basketball game as a sixth-grader back in the 1950s. We beat Ontario that afternoon!
Then your mention of the Silver Palace in Neillsville took me back to another time, about 25–30 years ago, when I went to that town for a family wedding. The reception was in that place, and as I was admiring the building, my cousin (the father of the bride), who grew up in Cheyenne Valley and spent lots of time in Ontario, came up and noticed I was admiring the amazing interior of the wedding hall. When he asked if it reminded me of another place, I said that it did, but I could not quite place it. Then he told me about the similarity to Ontario’s Community Hall.
I really hope something can be done to save at least part of that building in Ontario, the interior ceiling and roof in particular.
