Letter to the editor: Government is not the answer to everything

By MIKE ERICKSON | Elroy

It looks like we are seeing the destruction of our republic now. There are people who think what’s happening now is great because over the years they have been told that government is the answer to everything, when in actuality, government is NOT your friend — it is force. As George Washington said, “It is like fire: a troublesome servant and a forceful master.”

Be careful what you wish for! All that’s necessary for tyranny to prevail is three things: 1) control speech; 2) control the money supply; and 3) disarm the public. They are close to doing all of these things. Dictators must also control the military, and now they have the soldiers guarding them while letting cities burn. Who are they afraid of? Thomas Jefferson said, “When all power comes to Washington, the government will become as venal and oppressive as the one we separated from.”

Are we there yet? If you want to know who rules over you, find out who you are not allowed to criticize in government. John Adams said, “Liberty lost once is lost forever.”

Our republican is suffering death by a thousand cuts. Shame on us for letting it happen.

    Response to Don Foy:

Your last sentence in your letter is, “I don’t see how a person can be an immigrant-hating, gun-waving, gay-bashing Trump supporter and call him or herself Christian.” The First Amendment gives you the right to put out that statement.

I’m usually skeptical when someone who’s not a Christian explains to someone who is what Christian behavior ought to be. It’s like a conscientious objector telling a soldier what he or she should have done in battle.
