Letter to the editor: George Wilbur is Vernon County Board candidate

By GEORGE C. WILBUR | Town of Whitestown

I am writing to announce my candidacy for the Vernon County Board representing the Village of Ontario, the Town of Forest, the Town of Union north of Warner Road, and most of the Town of Whitestown, where I serve as Town Chair. Glenda Sullivan is now representing Ontario and Whitestown on the county board but is declining to seek reelection. She has encouraged me to run for this position.

I am a proponent of local control and a fiscal conservative and I will represent those viewpoints on the county board. Overall, the county seems to be running pretty well. In particular, I am impressed by the good operation of the highway department, the sheriff’s department, and the landfill/recycling operation. These departments are important to us and deserve our support.

Concerns have been expressed about the consolidation of power at the county level. The hiring of an administrator and reduction in the size of the county board may lead to less input from the rural towns and villages in the county. I have experience working with the county board and county government, and I am prepared to be your watchdog and local advocate in the new county board.

I would appreciate your support and your vote in the spring election.

I speak quite often at the N-O-W School Board meetings. In the short amount of time that the public is given, I brought up a summary of my concerns, as I am a patriot and a VERY concerned citizen.
