Razed in the 1970s, the Hotel White once was a busy place on Division Street in Ontario. It was often a summer home to Stanley Weinbaum (1902–1935), a ground-breaking writer in the science-fiction genre, and his wife. It is thought scenes from his seminal work, “A Martian Odyssey,” reflected his many explorations of the Kickapoo Valley. Harry Downing ran a restaurant in the hotel in the late 1940s. Pictured in back are Harry, holding daughter Rosella, along with his wife Bernadine and Alberta Sullivan. Jerry Downing, Sharon Sullivan and Sandy Downing are in front. The photo was taken in 1947.
