Falcon girls take fifth, boys seventh at Nightfall Classic

Friday night’s race at Wisconsin Dells was to be a sort of testing ground to help prepare the Brookwood cross-country teams for the high-intensity pace they’ll see at this year’s sectional in Westby.

Coach Mindy Waddell believes that competing against the large number of runners, the most of any meet in which the Falcons participate, and facing a number of ranked team at the annual Nightfall Classic will help her own squad get prepared for the oncoming postseason, which starts in just two weeks.

On the boys’ side, 281 runners participated in the Division 3 portion of Friday’s Nightfall Classic in Wisconsin Dells. The meet is held after sunset, with a course illuminated by various lighting. Brookwood finished seventh of 26 teams after scoring 232 points. Kohler won the D3 boys’ title with 60 points. Poynette’s Elias Ritzke won individual honors after finishing with a time of 16:47.74.

Cristian Barrientos was 25th overall, leading the way for Brookwood with a time of 17:56.82. Charly Guzman was 28th; and Dylan Powell, 35th. Roberto Mendoza was 74th; Onesime Triado, 78th; and Jon Hock, 122nd.

Royall’s Harley Leverenz was 184th, and Levi Lamb was 214th overall.

There were 238 girls who ran and finished the Division 3 portion of Friday’s race. Brookwood finished fifth among 23 complete teams.

Consistency was key, as the Falcons finished in typical order, with Shelly Powell ending the race with a time of 20:35.88, good enough for 18th overall. It’s important to note that Hillsboro’s Hannah Munson upset Powell with a 14th-place finish in a time of 20:30.85. Katie Gruen was second for Brookwood and 20th overall with a time of 21:01.47.

Kimberlee Downing was 41st overall; Margarita Silva, 46th; Lainey Teynor, 51st; Samantha Atteln, 54th; and Autumn Coleman, 98th.

Coach Waddell said, “I wanted the runners get a feel of how fast the competition would be at the sectional level, so our main focus was getting out really hard, which worked to our advantage. Nearly everyone had a season personal record, despite the course being 200 meters longer!”

Oshkosh Lourdes was the top finishing team in Division 3, scoring just 87 points. Boscobel was second with 93. Weyauwega-Fremont’s Abby Bartel won the race with a time of 19:04.35.

Brookwood will run at Arcadia on Saturday. The junior high races start at 9:30 a.m. Junior-varsity girls are scheduled to start at 11 a.m., with the varsity girls starting at 11:40 a.m. The varsity boys are scheduled for a 12:10 p.m. start, and the junior varsity boys will follow.

The Scenic Bluffs Conference meet will be Thursday, Oct. 17, at Hillsboro High School.
