After a season of malfunctioning football-field lights, the Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton Board of Education agreed last week to purchase new lights from Kish and Sons Electric of La Crosse for $159,300.
According to the district’s engineer, Chris Olsen of Galileo Consulting, the district received only two bids, both of them from Kish and Sons. The first was for metal halide convention lighting for $159,300; and the second, for LED for $179,300.
Noting that the quality of the lights was the same, Olson said the energy savings yielded by LEDs would be minimal, as the lights would be used for the football field only. Therefore, the savings would not cover the extra $20,000 upfront costs associated with the latter bid.
The new system, which will come with a 25-year warranty (Kish and Sons’ work will have a one-year warranty), will offer 30-candle power. The bid will include removal and disposal of the old lights.
