Memorial services for Clair Vernon Hutchens, 89, of Chickasha, Okla., will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, in Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church in Chickasha, Okla., with Joel Flugstad officiating.

Clair Vernon Hutchens was born June 12, 1925, in the town of Whitestown, the son of Lloyd E. Hutchens and Carol B. (Smith) Hutchens. He died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015, in Norman, Okla.

Clair grew up with four brothers and two sisters on a farm in the town of Whitestown, near La Farge.

He served in the Navy during World War II. He also worked for rubber mills in La Crosse. He then began farming and continued until he was 65 years old.

On May 20, 1948, Clair was united in marriage to Arlene Genevieve “Gen” Johnson in Westby. He and Gen moved to Chickasha, Okla., 23 years ago. He was employed by Grady Memorial Hospital as a groundskeeper, retiring four years ago.

Clair enjoyed fishing and watching NASCAR races. He was a member of the American Legion and Knights of Pythias Lodge for many years. He was quite a good pool player and enjoyed playing cards and line dancing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gen; his daughters, Rita Lynn and Anita Louise Hutchens; his brothers, Glen, Royce, Roger and Clyde Hutchens; and his son-in-law, Carl John Pieper.

Survivors include a son, Steven Clair Hutchens of Chickasha; a daughter, Gail Maureen (Hutchens) Pieper of Kannapolis, N.C.; his sisters, Dolores Sullivan of Wisconsin and Joyce Hill of California; a grandson, Nathan Clair Hutchens; a granddaughter, Sara Ann Pieper; his great-granddaughters, Ava, Ellie Clair and Madison; his great-grandson, Mason; a step-granddaughter, Tammy; a special friend, Loretta Atchley; and many extended family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Clair Hutchens may be made to Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 785, Chickasha, OK 73023 or to Bethany Lutheran Church, Attn: Jim Lee, S2014 Sandhill Road, La Farge.

Interment will be at a later date in the Bethany Lutheran Church Cemetery in La Farge.

Services and cremation arrangements were under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
