The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center was notified of a logging incident that occurred at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, on private property located on Brush Hollow Road in rural Viroqua, in the town of Webster, according to Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson.

While cutting down a standing tree, Cole Scott Leis, 34, of Wilton, a professional logger, was injured when a different tree fell nearby and struck him in the head. “This nearly spontaneous occurrence is just one of the many risks associated with the logging industry,” Torgerson said.

The injured man was transported to Vernon Health in Viroqua by La Farge Area Ambulance.  Also at the scene with the Sheriff’s Office were the La Farge Fire Department and the Viola Fire Department.

The logger was wearing a hard hat, likely reducing the extent of injury, Torgerson added.
