South Side News for Aug. 31

By MYRNA FAUSKA

The other day I saw a copy of the Kendall Keystone newspaper from April 19, 1935. The South Side column was included with no byline, but I think Agnes Schumann was the original correspondent. There was an item about Mrs. Melvin Fauska, my mother-in-law, hosting a club meeting, probably the South Side Homemakers, which is now the Helpful Homemakers. Also “little Darlene Fauska has been quite sick the past few days.” Darlene Fauska is now Darlene Martalock of South Ridge and my sister-in-law. She was 1 year and 11 months old at the time of the article. She recovered and is very well today.

A strange thing happened in the neighborhood. There was no news this week from the top of Zirk Hill. Evelyn and Jerry had a quiet week and are doing fine.

The Helpful Homemakers gathered for lunch in Tomah at Peking Chinese Restaurant at noon Tuesday. Arlene Garvens rode with me to the meeting. The gals had planned to go to a movie after lunch, but there was nothing showing that anyone wanted to see, so we all went our merry ways after making plans for the Kendall Labor Day parade.

On Thursday I lunched at the Kendall Dining Center and attended the talk by Anita Dahlby of Holmen, Wis., as she spoke on care giving and about her book, “A Journey to an End.” It is the story of her experience caring for her father during the last three years of his life. Her husband Jerry is a cousin of my husband Dave, Darlene Martalock and Margery Collins. Joe and Marg came from Black River Falls, Wis., for the event, and Dave and I joined them and the Dahlbys on South Ridge at Frank and Darl Martalock’s for an afternoon of fellowship and a light supper.

Jim and Mary Parkhurst joined Ron and Arlene Garvens for Friday night supper at Valley Inn in Elroy. On Saturday the Parkhursts attended the Winchel family reunion at the Ontario American Legion Hall.

Allan and Heather Vlasak went to Lake Wissota, Wis., on Sunday to help her brother Dean Tompkins celebrate his birthday at his cabin. His sister Julie Everson with hubby Russ and kids of Cashton also were there.

Brett Marty is now officially 6 years old as of last Wednesday, and on Thursday evening, Allan and Heather Vlasak, Lynette Vlasak and Sally Dana had a birthday supper with the family. That noon, Lynette and Sally had lunch at the Kendall Dining Center and attended Anita Dahlby’s presentation, which was sponsored by the Kendall Public Library.

On Friday, Lynette and Sally joined Carol Fronk and Betty Boeder, and they took their new pastor’s wife, Cheryl Neitzel, to lunch at Badger Crossing in Cashton, and then went sightseeing to show her points of interest in the area. Lowell and Arlys Zellmer had a weekend party at The Ranch for their grandchildren, and on Saturday, Lynette and Sally went down to be with the family. On Sunday the gals were in Baraboo, Wis., after church to have lunch with former neighbor Lisa Goostree.

It is always a joy and comfort to open the Holy Bible to the middle of the book and read some of the Psalms. My favorites are those that begin “Sing unto the Lord” or “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord.” No matter how often one reads them, the Psalms always have a good message, whether it is a cry for help, a praise to the Lord or a foretelling of the coming of Jesus. They are a good way to lift one’s spirits as we continue to grow in this garden where God has planted us.
