Lauren West will offer a program, “Plan Your Winter Pantry,” at 5 p.m. Monday, May 8. This free program will start with a potluck supper, and then Lauren will discuss how to eat healthier year round by planning your garden now. We will consider the best herbs to grow with preservation for winter in mind. This is a companion class. In the fall, we will learn the basics of fermenting, canning, freezing and drying.

You are invited to “A Night Out of Asia: Dinner and Tales from Japan, Korea, and China” at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 6, in the Ontario Public Library basement.

This is a fundraiser for the library that will feature a delicious and entertaining evening, including an Asian-inspired dinner interspersed with tales of travels by Mark and Monica Jagel, Jan Kenyon, and Wayne and Kathy Barrett. The cost is $20 per person, and you can RSVP by Friday, April 28, at 337-4651. Please indicate regular or vegetarian meal choice.

Our first community garden workday will be at 8:30 a.m. Monday, May 1. We will clean up the garden and get ready for the season. We have a beautiful new garden arbor courtesy of Mike and Karen Austad. We look forward to another productive year. Bring your gloves and join us.

The book group will discuss “The Power of One” by Bryce Courtenay at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 10. This uplifting novel is set in 1930s South Africa and depicts the journey of a young man who has the power to transform lives and make a difference. Stop by the library for a copy if you would like to read the book or join the discussion.
