In Loving Memory
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Fredrick John Schaefer, who departed this life, unexpectedly, on Oct. 19, 2025, at the age of 46. Fred was a beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, nephew, and cousin, cherished by family, friends, and all who knew him.

Born on Feb. 9, 1979, in Tomah, Wis., to Ida (Kuderer) and William Schaefer, Fred lived a life marked by kindness, generosity, and a deep commitment to family. Fred grew up in Norwalk, Wis. He graduated from Brookwood High School, where he would later spend many years coaching football, basketball, and track. Fred worked as a CNA at the Onalaska Care Center and eventually took a job at the Tomah VA, where he had been for the last 15 years. It was during this time when he was introduced to his future wife, Kelly Mecum. Fred and Kelly were married on Oct. 18, 2014, and would later settle in La Farge, Wis.
Fred loved sports! Any sport! Some of his favorite teams included the Baltimore Ravens, Packers, Badgers, Brewers, Bucks, or any good old high school game. He also enjoyed playing games and cards — even better when a little bit of money was on the line.
Fred is survived by his love, Kelly; his mom, Ida (partner Pete); and his brothers, Mike (and his kids Aidan, Jamie, and Everett), Zach (Ariane), and Pat. He is also survived by his in-laws, Doug, Amy (Zack and Matia), Casey, and Liam as well as numerous friends and extended family. His warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support will be deeply missed.
Fred was preceded in death by his dad, William, and his grandparents, Fred and Jeanette Schaefer and Richard and Marie Kuderer.
A celebration of Fred’s life will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at the La Farge Free Methodist Church, with the visitation from 11 a.m. until time of service. Family and friends are invited to gather and share memories, honoring a life well-lived. We are honoring Fred’s life by celebrating with one of his greatest joys: sports. Please feel free to wear one of Fred’s favorite team jersey or apparel as we share memories together.
The family would like to thank the La Farge EMS and Fire Department. Online condolences can be made at rothfamilycremation.com.
