It is a beautiful and exciting day in Wilton. The date is Oct. 20, 1960. Today Wilton plays Brookwood for the first-ever football game between the two schools. Plus it is Wilton’s homecoming game.
You can feel the tension in the air. It is the first year for football for both schools.
• Bragging rights are on the line.
• The crowd is unbelievable. Everyone from the Wilton, Ontario and Norwalk area who can be there is there.
• WCOW radio from Sparta is broadcasting the game live!
• The atmosphere is charged with an underlying current of “we’ll show you” due to the fact that Wilton had not joined Ontario-Norwalk in the formation of the new school district.
The game: Wilton prevailed 14–7.
In observance of that day 60 years ago, Larry (Toby) Bever, quarterback for Wilton, and Wynn Liersch, halfback, will be at what was the old field at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 20. It will be a time to reminisce and enjoy the memories from that day. All are welcome to join, bring pictures, articles and, most of all, your memories. It would be fun to hear from someone who listened to the radio broadcast and can remember it. We’ll be there with our lawn chairs, a beverage and our masks. See you!
