Wilton, Norwalk split assets of police department

Dividing up the assets of the soon-to be-defunct Norwalk-Wilton Police Department, the Wilton Village Board approved an agreement Monday with the Norwalk Village Board.

Wilton will get the 2004 Crown Victoria squad and its accompanying equipment, along with the department office furniture. Norwalk will get the department’s 2005 Crown Victoria squad, the car equipment and the radar speed sign.

Also, Wilton will pay Norwalk $500 toward the 2005 Crown Victoria, as the vehicle has worn tires and wiring problems.

The filing cabinets will be divided equally between the villages.

Both villages have indicated they would form their own police departments.

The two municipalities agreed in October to disband the joint department, which had been formed in 2005. The Wilton Village Board had disagreed with the police commission’s proposal to have Police Chief Steve Johnson participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System. For Johnson to have done so, the commission bylaws would have to reflect changes limiting the two village boards’ power, such as the ability to approve or deny bills over $500.

On a related note, the Wilton Village Board approved Johnson’s resignation effective Aug. 19.

Board approves 2015 budget

The village’s 2015 budget will total $525,992, of which $141,409 will come from the local tax levy. The board gave its final approval of the budget Monday.

Other business

• Conforming to federal insurance rules, the board agreed to write off $13,395.62 in ambulance-service fees that weren’t fully reimbursed by Medicare or Medicaid in 2013. Due to federal regulations, the service cannot collect beyond what Medicare or Medicaid will pay for a patient’s care.

• The Graewin family recently had donated $600 in memory of Roger and LaVonne Graewin for ambulance equipment.

• The board agreed to allow Duane and Sharon Olson, 406 Walker St., to use private sewer service. No municipal service is available at that address.

• The board approved a two-year, $1,040 contract with MedPro Midwest Services of Naperville, Ill., for ambulance equipment.
