South Side News for Sept. 7

By MYRNA FAUSKA

With the holiday weekend just past and all of the activities in Kendall and Hillsboro, we have a lot of items to share from the neighbors, so I’ll get right to it.

At the top of Zirk Hill, Jerry took off for South Dakota with some friends on a fishing trip on Wednesday. While he was gone, Randy and Sue Zirk came from Madison on Thursday and Friday to be with mom Evelyn. On Saturday, Bruce and Julie Zirk of Dutch Hollow spent the day with Ev, and on Sunday, Frieda Jacobson took Ev out for lunch at the New Lisbon Family Restaurant. Later in the day, Jerry arrived home, and on Monday he took his mom to Hillsboro for the Labor Day parade.

Down the hill, Ruth Schumann is still enjoying life at Milestone Assisted Living in Hillsboro, and last Tuesday and Wednesday, she was in Reedsburg with son Mike and wife Vickie. While there, she was able to see grandson Tim’s daughter Sara Mae and the newest addition to the family, Willa.

Steve Schumann and Deb Wood, along with Bryana and Scott, were among the folks lining the main street of Kendall at noon Sunday for the Labor Day parade.

On Tuesday evening, I was in Kendall for the public library’s monthly book club. We had read Melanie Benjamin’s biography “The Aviator’s Wife,” the story of Anne Morrow Lindburgh. On Saturday evening, my husband Dave and I were at the Kendall Community Hall for the All-School Reunion and Kendall Gathering. Sunday found me with Carol Bradley, Arlene Garvens and Mary Parkhurst in the Helpful Homemakers parade entry as we advertised our 90th anniversary. Marion Fauska started the South Side Homemakers in 1927 with several neighbor ladies, and along the way, the name was changed to Helpful Homemakers, as members from other areas had joined the group.

On Friday, Ron and Arlene Garvens took Jim and Mary Parkhurst out for supper at the Mauston China Buffet to celebrate Jim’s birthday, which was Sept. 6. On Saturday, Jason and Carley Garvens came from Madison to spend a few days with grandparents Ron and Arlene and attend the Kendall Labor Day parade.

On Sunday the Parkhursts were in Kendall for the parade, and on Monday morning, son Randy drove from Orfordville, Wis., to be with the folks for a couple of days.

Farther up the valley, Roland and Vicki Koenig spent the Labor Day weekend laboring, as they put in a new concrete driveway.

On Saturday, Chip and Mary Marty and kids entertained friends from Holmen at The Ranch in Johnnycake Hollow. On Sunday, Mary, Layla, Brett and Mya were in Kendall for the parade and the kids’ games, which were sponsored by the Kendall Public Library and were in Glendale Park. Chip joined a few friendsfor a trip to Miller Park in Milwaukee, where they watched the Brewers win. On Monday the whole family rode on the METCO float in Hillsboro’s Labor Day Parade.

On Monday afternoon, Lynette Vlasak and Sally Dana called on Al Pasch and Judy Bonn, and the next evening, they were at the Kendall Public Library book club meeting. On Saturday they attended the Kendall Gathering at the community hall, and on Sunday they watched the parade and worked at the kids’ games in the park.

A new month is upon us, and autumn is already in the air. August prepared us for fall weather, and we can already see some color among the leaves of maples and and some of the birch and poplars. Even a few leaves are falling. God has created a spectacular world for us. Anyone who doesn’t like a certain climate has a wide variety to choose from. Personally, I can’t conceive of living in a place where it is warm all the time or always cold. I like the changes of the seasons just fine, even though I have been known to grouse a bit about inclement weather. I still thank the Lord that He has placed me in this place and with these people. I love you all.
