South Side News for Sept. 13

By MYRNA FAUSKA

As I write this, we are one-third of the way through September and one week into fall by the calendar according to Myrna. There are signs of fall: the soybeans are ripening, the early-planted corn is turning brown, and a few trees are beginning to show color. During the past week, there’s been a little activity in the neighborhood, so read on.

Next door, Steve Schumann and Deb Wood had company Saturday evening when Deb’s sister Dar and spouse Neilan Petersen arrived with Deb’s daughter Dana and her friend Brandon.

Here at Fauska’s Funny Farm, we enjoyed a visit with cousin Jerry Zirk on Labor Day afternoon. The rest of the week was uneventful until Saturday, when Chirstine (Schumann) Blum of Olivia, Minn., arrived to spend the night with us. She accompanied us as we picked up Jim and Mary Parkhurst and went up the hill to the Koenig Warehouse, where the Schumann Valley Horseback Riders were hosting a landowners’ appreciation picnic. It had lots of good food and fellowship, and Christine got to visit with some of her former neighbors here, where she grew up.

Ron and Arlene Garvens spent the weekend in Waukesha, Wis., where they attended their 63rd class reunion. On Friday they lunched with Tom and Sally Cherek, friends from the group with whom they used to bike. Saturday was the reunion, and on Sunday morning, they had breakfast with daughter and hubby Korinne and Randy Falk, granddaughter Nicole, and great-grandsons Nathan and Grant Bruckner before heading home.

On Wednesday, Randy Parkhurst made his weekly trip from Orfordville, Wis., to see his parents Jim and Mary, and on Thursday morning, they went to Club Chaparral near Wonewoc for breakfast to celebrate Jim’s 90th birthday. On Sunday afternoon, Ron and Mary Melvin called on the Parkhursts.

Heather Vlasak had a birthday last week, so on Wednesday, Allan took her out for supper at the Summit Supper Club to celebrate her entry into a new decade. You figure out which one. I’ll give you a hint: it’s not the one I’m in, as she is much younger than I.

This column wouldn’t be complete without a recap of the activities of Lynette Vlasak and Sally Dana. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the gals attended the Brewers games at Miller Park in Milwaukee, where they watched them beat the Cubs at one game and lose the other one. St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Ladies Aid had its annual flower show on Thursday, and Sally attended. On Friday she was at the Kendall Senior Dining Center for lunch and the birthday club. Later in the day, the gals went to Gundersen St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hillsboro to see Alice Brandau, as she was recovering from knee-replacement surgery. Alice is now at Elroy Health Service, 307 Royall Ave., Elroy, WI 53929, where she continues her rehabilitation. After seeing Alice, they had supper at Beezers Bar and Grill with Lori Cherf. On Sunday they attended visitation for Don Braund at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kendall. He joins his wife Caroline, who went home to the Lord this summer, so now they are together again, and our heartfelt sympathy goes out to their family as they grieve their loss while rejoicing in Heaven’s gain.

In spite of adversity, we learn how compassionate our fellow man is. Those most affected by the recent flooding are finding out how their neighbors both near and far are showing up to help with clean up and help in any way they can. God sends His angels in the form of humans to be there for those in need of His loving hand. Although He doesn’t prevent calamity, He does provide for protection and help, and even in these circumstances, we can thank and praise the Lord. As far as I know, I haven’t heard of any loss of life during this time, and for that, we can be very grateful. Hang in there, folks. Things are getting better.
