Winter is here, and it isn’t even Thanksgiving, and on the calendar according to Myrna, winter isn’t supposed to begin until the day after that wonderful feast day. This year, Thanksgiving is early, so the cold season could have waited at least a few more weeks. On with the news.
On Saturday, Steve Schumann, Deb Wood, Scott and Bryana were in Madison for a Special Olympics bowling tournament. Bryana got a gold medal, and Scott placed sixth. Congratulations, you two.
On Tuesday morning, I worked at the election in Glendale with Carol Fronk and Carol Bradley. We worked until 2 p.m., and the afternoon shift had a record turnout by the end of the day. At noon Sunday, Dave and I attended the La Crosse/Monroe Counties Farmers Union annual meeting at Sparta Family Restaurant. On the way home, we stopped in Kinney Valley to visit Frank and Alrita Benish. Their son Mark and his family were there, and we enjoyed seeing them. Back in the ‘90s, Mark rented our farm for six years after we retired.
Randy Parkhurst of Orfordville, Wis., spent Tuesday and Wednesday with his parents Jim and Mary. On Friday, Ron and Arlene Garvens picked up the Parkhursts and went to Elroy for fish dinner at the Valley Inn.
On Monday, Lynette Vlasak and Sally Dana took Layla, Brett and Mya Marty to Tomah for a treat at Culver’s. On Wednesday, Lynette went to Mount Horeb, Wis., to attend the high school’s production of “Music Man” while Sally played mahjong with the regular group at the library. Friday evening was movie night at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church’s fellowship hall, with the library-sponsored movie “I Can Only Imagine.” The next evening, the gals took Kim Coen out for supper at Fireball Lanes Bar & Grill to celebrate her birthday.
As I was in the processof getting this column written, the phone rang, and it was Paul Gifford in Kenosha letting us know that he and our nephew Jim Boles of Racine would arrive Friday to pursue the elusive whitetails in our woods. We haven’t heard from great-nephew Ben Dorval and his sons Barrett and Carlton yet, but we expect to see them this weekend as well. The Lord has blessed us with family and friends with whom to share the special days of the year, and we appreciate His constant loving care as we keep on keeping on where He has planted us.
