South Side News for May 17

By MYRNA FAUSKA

This is one of those weeks when my brain is in neutral and I can’t think of an interesting opening for this column. I hope all of you mothers out there had a blessed day Sunday and went to bed that night feeling appreciated.

On Wednesday the Hill Country Belles Red Hats gals met for lunch at the Westby House B & B and enjoyed a delicious lunch, with shopping in their elegant gift shop. Queen Mother Shirley Gorn rode with me, and after the meal, we went across the street and shopped at Dregne’s, where I bought a few Norwegian goodies for my half-breed hubby. His mom was a first-generation Norwegian-American, and his dad was a first-generation German-American.

On Saturday afternoon, relatives and friends gathered at Steve Schumann’s and Deb Wood’s next door to celebrate Scott’s birthday. It’s a good thing they have a lot of parking space, as it looked like a used-car lot when I went by.

Last Monday I joined sisters-in-law Darlene Martalock and Margery Collins for a Dahlby cousins spring birthday party at Nancy Tolvstad’s home in Onalaska. (You can tell by the last names that these were on the Norwegian side of the family.) At noon Saturday, I was the guest of Lynette Vlasak and Sally Dana at the Mother–Daughter–Friend Banquet at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kendall, and Heather Vlasak picked me up for the event. Sister church St. Matthew’s of South Ridge shared in hosting the luncheon.

On Friday evening, Jim and Mary Parkhurst joined Ron and Arlene Garvens for fish supper at Valley Inn in Elroy. On Sunday morning, Don and Donna DeWitt of rural Ontario picked up Jim and Mary for the Elroy Legion Hall’s Mother’s Day breakfast.

On Saturday the Garvens spent the day at the Olbrich Gardens in Madison for the annual African-violet sale. After packing up at the end of the day, Ron and Arlene continued southeast to Waukesha, Wis., where they spent Mother’s Day with daughter Korinne and granddaughter Nicole with spouse Nick and great-grandsons Nathan and Grant.

As usual, the gals on the west end of the neighborhood had a busy week. On Monday, Sally Dana attended the farewell party for Kathy Smialek at the Kendall Senior Dining Center. On Wednesday she and Lynette Vlasak joined Carol Fronk, Betty Boeder and Cheryl Neitzel for lunch at Spring Valley in Union Center. On Thursday, Lynette was at a library meeting in West Salem, and in the evening, she attended the Mount Horeb School District all-band concert. On Friday, Sally was at the meal site again, this time to help Arlene Burch celebrate her May birthday. That evening, the gals attended the Royall Pops Concert.

On Saturday the gals were at the Mother–Daughter–Friend Banquet at St. John’s, where Lynette was the Mistress of Ceremonies. On Sunday the Marty family made Mother’s Day dinner for Mary’s mom Arlys and dad Lowell Zellmer at The Ranch in Johnnycake Hollow. In the evening, Allan and Heather Vlasak, Lynette and Sally, the Martys and the Zellmers, along with Mariane Weidenbach, gathered at The Ranch for pizza and birthday cookie to celebrate Allan’s natal day, which is on Tuesday.

“This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it,” is a chorus that goes through my head some mornings, especially when I wake up in a foul mood, which is too often since I am not a morning person. It helps me get my priorities straight and get ready for the day’s activities by reminding me that whatever happens, God is still in His heaven and all will be right in my little corner of creation.
