South Side News for May 10

By MYRNA FAUSKA

Things are back to normal (whatever that is) here at Fauska’s Funny Farm, and I am enjoying my second spring this year, as Wisconsin is catching up with Kentucky, which I visited last month.

I have Bethlehem starflowers blooming at the corner of our front porch, and my prairie fire crab tree is getting ready to burst into beautiful fuchsia blooms. I saw my first wood violet on the hill behind our house, so the morels can’t be far behind. Ah, spring, what a blessed season. Even the dandelions are welcome.

Next door, Steve Schumann and Deb Wood took Bryana and Scott to Oregon, Wis., where they participated in Special Olympics field and track competition on Saturday. Steve and Deb had been in Hillsboro during the week to see his mom Ruth at Milestone Assisted Living.

Vicki Koenig also has been stopping in to see mom Ruth on her way home from work in Richland Center.

Here at our place, we had turkey hunters, as nephew Jim Boles of Racine with his friend Paul Gifford from Kenosha came, saw and conquered, taking two birds home with them. They left Friday for Friendship, Wis., where they picked up Jim’s boat at his place there, and went fishing on Castle Rock Lake on Saturday. That evening, great-nephew Ben Dorval came from Union Grove, Wis., to pursue the elusive bird and went home Monday unsuccessful, but with some souvenirs from Kentucky for the kids.

On Friday evening, Ron and Arlene Garvens came down to the valley and picked up Jim and Mary Parkhurst to go to dinner at Valley Inn in Elroy.

Allan Vlasak took wife Heather to La Crosse on Saturday so she could attend the state music festival at Viterbo University.

On Saturday morning, the Marty family was in Cashton for the Dandelion Dash, and Layla came in first in the 3K. Way to go, young lady!

And now for the news from the Vlasak and Dana household. On Tuesday, Sally Dana did roadside cleanup with the Kendall Lions, Stepping Stones 4-H and Catholic Financial Life, with pizza and pop afterward. Thursday was Lynette Vlasak’s sister Arlys Zellmer’s birthday, and the family met at the Great Dane Restaurant in Madison at noon to celebrate. Later Lynette and Sally met Peggy Dallman and Patty Schafer for supper at the Olive Garden. On Friday evening, the gals joined Vicky Ludeking and son Cody, along with Diane Bunk, for fish supper at Fireball Bar and Lanes in Kendall. On Saturday they drove to La Crosse to have lunch with Sally’s Mexico traveling buddies at Fiesta Mexicana.

Isn’t it wonderful how God created this planet to provide a myriad of climates to satisfy every desire? Although one may find oneself in a climate that isn’t to his or her liking, he or she can always choose to move to a more comfortable environment. As for me, I love the four seasons and may grouse about the cold of winter or the muddy spring, the hot summer days or the brown of late autumn after the glory of the earlier color, but I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. I’d love to try Hawaii, though, but I think I would be bored before too long with the near-perfect weather. So thank you Lord for planting me here in your garden called Wisconsin.
