South Side News for July 12

By MYRNA FAUSKA

Since the weather did not cooperate on the Fourth, fireworks had to be postponed, so Ontario had its fantastic display on Saturday night, and Steve Schumann and the crew from Seven Springs Farm next door to us were there to enjoy it.

We had a quiet week here at Fauska’s Funny Farm, but we enjoyed a visit on Monday with Shorty and Shirley Waddell of Sparta, with a lawn sign for their son Ron, who is running for sheriff of Monroe County. We are very impressed with Ron’s credentials and feel that he would be a good choice of leadership for law enforcement in our county.

Up the valley, Jim and Mary Parkhurst enjoyed a visit from her niece Jolene Downs and daughter Janelle of Ocala, Fla., on Tuesday. On Friday night, Don and Donna DeWitt picked them up for supper at Valley Inn in Elroy.

On Tuesday evening, the Marty kids took part in the pet parade in Ontario. They had Lynette Vlasak’s dog Wilma and Heather Vlasak’s two kittens. The next morning, the family was back in Ontario for the kids’ 1-mile run, and Layla came in first in her age group. Even 3-year-old Mya participated and finished her portion of the race.

Lynette Vlasak, Sally Dana, Heather Vlasak and Julie Zirk went to Fort Atkinson, Wis., to the Fireside Theater for the production of “Church Basement Ladies — Part II.” As I reported a couple of weeks ago, this is one of the funniest plays around, and if you have a chance to see it, do go.

Vicki Ludeking had a birthday recently, and on Friday, Lynette and Sally took her to the Fireball Lanes and Bar for a belated celebration dinner. That evening, the Vlasak families gathered at Chip and Mary’s for a fireworks display, and on Saturday night, everyone was in Ontario for the big fireworks production. Lynette and Sally joined Darlene Martalock of South Ridge to enjoy the colorful lights in the sky. On Sunday the gals watched the Brewers beat the Braves at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

Our sympathy this week goes out to the families of Linda Rieck and her brother Otto Zinke, who both left us last week for their new home in eternity. It seems only a short time ago that Linda was with us at book club in the library, and now we look forward to joining her someday, when we will be able to enjoy the fellowship of all of our relatives and friends in the presence of our Lord. A new experience awaits us at the end of this life, and for the Christian, it will be the dessert at the end of a wonderful meal. Praise the Lord.

Column for July 5

How blessed we are to be living in the home of the free because of the brave. By the time you read this, our annual Independence Day celebration will be history for this year. I hope you all had a great day of celebrating the birth of our great nation. Next week, you can read all about how our neighbors spent this special occasion. In the meantime, read on for news of the last week in June.

This week we begin with the comings and goings of the Fauskas. On Tuesday evening, we were at the Kendall Public Library, where we discussed a children’s book entitled “Wonder,” which is about a child with deformed facial features and his introduction into public school. The group agreed that this book should be required reading for all elementary school children and their parents. A few months ago, the library’s Friday night movie was “Wonder,” and it was good to read the book after seeing the movie.

On Wednesday the Helpful Homemakers met at Arlene Garvens’ home and enjoyed a delicious brunch of breakfast casseroles, mixed fruit and coffee cakes. Plans were made for the rest of the summer, including our annual picnic in July. On Saturday, my husband Dave and I attended the memorial service for Don Elsing, a former Kendall resident, at Fountain Lutheran Church. On Sunday we joined the Kaus family at their reunion in Hillsboro. It was good to visit with cousins Roger and Gladys Kaus of Raleigh, N.C. On the way home, we stopped up on the ridge west of us to deliver a get-well card from the group to Evelyn Kaus Friedl, who is recuperating from a heart condition.

After hosting the homemakers on Wednesday, Ron and Arlene Garvens worked at the Elroy United Methodist Church’s monthly community supper. On Thursday, 23 members of the KTY Jun Quilt Guild headed to Wausau on a shop hop, stopping at four quilt shops. From there, they stopped at shops in Plover and Wisconsin Rapids for a successful day of collecting fabrics for their favorite hobby.

On Friday evening, Ron and Arlene picked up Jim and Mary Parkhurst and drove to Elroy for fish supper at Valley Inn Restaurant. The rest of the week, the Parkhursts have kept busy in their garden, as one can see as you drive past it across the road from their place.

Lynette Vlasak attended theKendall Gathering meeting Tuesday at the Kendall American Legion Hall, and she and Sally Dana were at the Kendall Library Book Club in the evening. On Thursday morning, Sally played mahjong with Cheryl Neitzel, Linda Parrish, Donna Gosselin and Eileen Richie. On Thursday afternoon, kids in the Kendall Public Library summer reading program saw the movie “Sing” at the Elroy Theater. Mya Marty has her third birthday this week, and Lynette and Sally joined the Marty family Friday evening to celebrate in advance.

God bless America. Our country continues to need His blessings, and we pray that He will guide our citizens as we vote in the elections this summer and fall for local, state and national leaders, that we make wise choices, and that those who are elected will serve us faithfully. More than 200 years ago, our forefathers fought to give us this freedom, and we are especially grateful to the Lord for this wonderful country. Thus ends this week’s mini sermon. Amen.
