During this first week of February, we haven’t had a lot of activity in the neighborhood, even with the beautiful weather last weekend. But if you read on, you’ll find out what a few of us have been doing other than grocery shopping and doctor appointments, which seem to be frequent events considering the age of most of our local folks.
Next door to us on the east, Bryana Hanratty, Deb Wood’s daughter, was in Madison to participate in the Special Olympics Basketball Tournament with the Viroqua team on Saturday.
My husband Dave and I have been staying pretty close to home much of the time; however, on Thursday we were at Kendall Evangelical Free Church, helping serve for Bob McCracken’s funeral. On Saturday morning, I attended the visitation for Reita McCracken at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Kendall. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to their families during this time of mourning.
On Friday evening, Ron and Arlene Garvens picked up Jim and Mary Parkhurst and went tothe Hillsboro Fireman’s Hall for the fish fry. On Sunday morning, the Parkhursts joined Ronnie and Julie Winchel for breakfast at the Elroy American Legion Hall. The Garvens also were there for food and fellowship.
As Vicki Koenig comes home from teaching in Richland Center each day, she stops in at Milestone Assisted Living in Hillsboro to see her mom Ruth Schumann. Also, Vicki’s hubby Roland saw his mother-in-law on Saturday. Ruth is adjusting well to life in town and enjoying some of the activities provided at her new digs.
While Sally Dana is enjoying sunny Mexico, housemate Lynette Vlasak has not been stagnating. On Tuesday evening, she was in Kendall for the Lions meeting at the Hidden Inn. The Kendall Public Library keeps her busy most days, and on Friday evening, she attended the visitation for Reita McCracken, and then went to the Royall vs. New Lisbon basketball game with Carla Von Haden and Karen Arzt. On Saturday she joined some friends at Mary Anne and Martha Airth-Kindree’s home for an afternoon of playing Canasta.
The Lord is blessing us with a typical February, weather-wise, but I’m not complaining. It is quite pleasant compared with a few years when the temperatures didn’t get above zero for much of the month. There is always something to be thankful for, and at my age I can always hibernate during inclement weather and pray for those who have to be out and about regardless of snow or icy roads. Perhaps that’s why He lets some of us get old, so we can fellowship with Him and pray for others who are in need of His special care. So let’s just keep thanking and praising God.
