South Side News for Dec. 8

By MYRNA FAUSKA

December has arrived and covered the landscape with a white blanket making it look more like Christmas. As WOLX radio station plays “Sleigh Ride,” “Jingle Bells” and “Winter Wonderland,” the scenery reflects the messages of the music, and I sing along with gusto as I drive through the snowy countryside. Before the snow came, the neighbors have been busy going to and fro.

On Saturday morning, Frieda Jacobson picked up Evelyn Zirk to go to the Grace Lutheran Church in Elroy for the Joy Circle’s 40th annual Advent Breakfast. Those gals have been serving delicious food for the body and the soul all of these years and have so far never repeated a menu or a program and each year the program leaves the attendees with the true meaning of the season, Christmas begins with Christ.

Mike Schumann always makes time in his busy schedule to come from Reedsburg to see his mom Ruth. One day last week, he was there to fix her washing machine. He’s handy, too.

On Tuesday afternoon, Christopher Young and son Kit of Hillsboro stopped in at our place for a visit. That evening, we were in Kendall at the library for the book club. We had read Jon Hassler’s “Simon’s Night,” which made for a lively discussion. On Saturday, I picked up Judi Pulaski and we met Donna Thorson at the church for the Joy Circle’s Advent Breakfast. When I got home, niece Helena Boles and hubby Jim had come over from their ranch east of Friendship, Wis., for a visit and a late lunch.

Jim and Mary Parkhurst joined Ron and Arlene Garvens for fish supper at the Valley Inn in Elroy Friday evening. Saturday the Garvens went over to Mauston to the Christmas celebration at the Boorman House. I have a correction from last week regarding the Garvens: they were at Royall High School on Sunday taking down the quilt show, not the craft show, as I erroneously reported.

On Saturday evening Layla Marty had six of her girl friends at the DVZ Ranch in Johnnycake Hollow for a slumber party. Little brother Brett wasn’t to be outdone, so he invited a friend to come to his party. Baby Mya spent the night with Grandma Karen Marty in Kendall.

The rest of the Vlasak family was busy as usual, with Lynette Vlasak and Sally Dana at the library book club Tuesday evening. Then, on Thursday, Sally attended the St. John’s Ladies Aid Christmas luncheon at the church while Lynette was at a library meeting in La Crosse. In the evening, Carol Fronk joined the gals for the One Acchord Christmas performance in Tomah.

On Friday evening, Lynette and Sally drove to Verona Area Music Theatre for its musical production of “It’s a Wonderful World.” On Saturday they joined Heather Vlasak for the Advent Brunch at Grace Lutheran Church. Afterward they went to Lyndon Station to Power’s Candies open house. After church Sunday, Lynette and Sally joined Jane Vlasak, Dave and Kathy Snyder and Dean Tompkins for lunch at Bender’s Restaurant in Elroy.

Last week I was unable to connect with the De Fligers, our newest neighbors, as Terry and Rachel had been in Westfield, Wis., where they were godparents to niece Harper Ann as she was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Back home, it was a quiet week for them.

Once again, we are in the Advent season before the celebration of Jesus’ birthday, and we pray that as you prepare for this annual festive day, you will keep the Reason for the Season in your preparations and in your hearts.
