South Side News for April 26

By MYRNA FAUSKA

Time flies when you’re having fun. Actually, it flies even when you aren’t having fun. But this past week was a fun one for me despite hubby Dave having cataract surgery in his right eye Monday. It is healing well, and there are no problems, so this weekend we took off for Racine to continue to celebrate my becoming an octogenarian with my nieces and friends. We stayed with Jim and Helena Boles and partied all weekend with Gary and Leanne La Valle, Alison Dorval, Ben and Kim Dorval, Chris Boles, Paul and Denise Gifford and Lou and Cindy Peasley. We were home again Monday afternoon with a couple of Kringles from O & H Bakery.

The farm at the top of Zirk Hill was vacant last week, as Jerry spent several days at his other home in Hayward, Wis. His neighbor there has been feeding the deer, and Jerry had 21 of the four-legged critters on his front lawn. He was back at the home farm Sunday.

Next door to us, Steve Schumann and Deb Wood took the young folks to Kickapoo High School on Sunday for the donkey basketball game.

Over at Milestone Assisted Living in Hillsboro, Ruth Schumann has been receiving visits from her offspring during the week and recently had a phone call from her granddaughter Katie in Connecticut.

Last week, Arlene Garvens and the Elroy quilters had a wonderful time at a quilting retreat in Paducah, Ky. On Friday evening, Ron went down the hill and picked up Jim and Mary Parkhurst for supper at Valley Inn in Elroy.

Guy Parkhurst came from Janesville for the weekend and spent the first part of it with his grandma Elaine Woodard north of Kendall, and then on Saturday arrived in the valley to spend the rest of the time with grandpa Jim and grandma Mary.

This week was Mary Marty’s turn to celebrate a birthday, and on Monday, aunt Lynette Vlasak and Sally Dana went to the Marty home with Mary’s favorite, a Dairy Queen ice cream cake.

On Wednesday, Sally Dana lunched with Donnee Pliner at Perkins Restaurant in Tomah. On Thursday she and Lynette were at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on South Ridge for the LWMS spring rally. On Friday, Lynette was at the Mount Horeb Teachers Association, as she and other retired teachers judged a trivia night fundraiser. On Sunday the gals were in Milwaukee at Miller Park, where they watched the Brewers win their third game against the Marlins. On the way home, they stopped in Wisconsin Dells and had supper with Lisa Goostree at Famous Dave’s.

It looks like spring has sprung and the Lord is taking pity on us and blessing us with warmer weather. On the way home from Racine, our van thermometer reached 69 degrees. Now that’s more like it. Perhaps we’ll finally have some spring blooms. We saw a couple of places where the grape hyacinths were in full blossom, carpeting the area around them with deep purple. We hope it won’t be long before the other early flowers start springing up. Would we appreciate them as much if we hadn’t recently experienced the late snow? God is still in control, and He knows what’s best for us even if we don’t think so sometimes. Praise the Lord anyway.
