I made it! Last Thursday I added another year. Now I’m 85. That sounds so old, and I find it difficult to believe I made it. Part of my day was spent at St. Joseph’s in Hillsboro, where I started a new therapy program. I guess you can expect some problems to arise as we add years.
I was a young farmer’s wife, and I was determined to do my part. I didn’t worry about aching knees and stiff joints. That came a half century later. And who ever heard of sunscreen and sunglasses while making hay 60 years ago?
I have to admit my greatest challenge is macular degeneration. I have an eye injection once a month and a picture taken once every four to six months. On Friday they found no change, and that’s a blessing.
It has become increasingly difficult to write this column, and I’m concerned about errors. Now I’ve warned you readers that you can expect almost anything from this writer. I’m going to try to press on, and if my Lord is willing, I just might make it to 86.

There have been some anxious moments for Hazel Pasch this past week as she watched Hurricane Erma sweep across Florida. Phone calls from her daughter Chris and Gary from Sarasota, Fla., and their son Mike and family of Miami assured Hazel they were safe. Granddaughter Heather and her family near Tampa provided a place of refuge for several days.
“We arrived safely, have enough food for a week, and there are two shelters if needed. And we have our faith,” were welcome words from Chris.
Chris and Gary have returned to their home, and grandson Mike and his family will head back to Miami. The prayers of many have wended their way to the south the past two weeks.
And I ask, “Why does it take a disaster of such magnitude to bring people together, forget our differences, and look for ways to show love to each other?”
Bernice (Krause) Creviston was laid to rest by her husband Raymond at the South Ridge Cemetery on Saturday morning. Hazel Pasch attended her visitation in Tomah the evening before.
Frank and Darlene Martalock were among those who attended services for Sandy (Blaney) Alderman at the Evangelical Free Church in Kendall on Saturday morning
And happy 50th anniversary to Everett and Carol Bradley, who celebrated this special day at their home with family and friends. Frank and Darlene were part of those who enjoyed the occasion.
And that’s it for Sept. 12, 2017.
