South Ridge News for Nov. 19

By ALICE BRANDAU

The Wilton Community Center was packed with people Saturday night. The cooks in the kitchen were busy handing out plates of food, and there were plenty of beverages. Tables were full of wonderful treats to buy. And a large number of gift baskets, etc., were on display and offered for a silent auction. The live auction brought over-the-top prices, which showed the spirit of people who were there to support Patty (Brandau) Dwyer, who is recuperating from a stroke. You just don’t do all of this without a host of volunteer, donors and buyers who make it a total success.

We have tickets to the Tomah Concert Series, and it conflicted with Wilton’s event on Saturday night, so I had to leave early. The International String Trio thrilled the audience for the entire performance and ended with the soft, quiet rendition of “Hallelujah.” Music truly can bring solace to our souls.

A special service for deer hunters will be at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on South Ridge at 7 p.m. Thursday. The annual Ladies Aid Auction also will be offered that evening following the group’s regular meeting at 7 p.m.

It’s amazing what doctors can do, and Bob Heinz would agree, as he had laser surgery to correct broken blood vessels on an eye Tuesday. Nephew Jay Fuit was his chauffeur, with Madison his destination.

It was a welcome visit from daughter Peggy of Northampton, Mass., who arrived at her parents’ home (Frank and Darlene Martalock) on Wednesday evening. They had lots of catching up to do, and it was a chance to spend one-on-one time with family. I was happy to have a visit from Peggy, her mom and our daughter Ann on Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon and evening found the Martalocks spending time with son Jeff and his wife Lynn at Tomah, and early Sunday morning, Peggy left for Massachusetts.

Cindy and Bernie Fitzsimmons of Watertown, Wis., also stopped by us for a short visit on Saturday morning. They winterized their cabin. It was a good way to start the day.

This is an OLD recipe for caramel apples. You make the sauce and dip apple slices in it.

• 1 cup of sugar

• ¾ cup of white Karo syrup

• 1 cup of condensed milk

• 1/8 tsp. of salt

Cook to 240 degrees on medium heat. Cool slightly and add one-fourth cup of butter and one teaspoon of vanilla.

And that’s it for Nov. 16, 2015.
