South Ridge News for May 18

By ALICE BRANDAU

“No pain, No gain” was said for people who just couldn’t quit, even though their backs, knees, the legs were telling their brains to give it up. I have loved growing flowers, digging in the dirt, and the knowing satisfaction of conquering weeds. There is something to be said about getting a job well done. I just know my gardening days are numbered and I don’t like it.

The Mother-Daughter Banquet at St. Matthew’sLutheran Church on South Ridge was well attended at noon Saturday, with about 60 women and several children enjoying the potluck lunch and program created by Lynette Vlasak and her helpers. As chair of the program, Lynette has helped make many good memories at this annual affair.

Russell Bolden stopped by to visit my husband Bob and I last week. Russell brings a lot of fond memories to talk about, including the years he worked at the sale barn.

I spent a leisurely hour with Erna (Tim) Pasch this week. She is recuperating from a broken foot and a broken ankle, the result of a car accident several weeks ago, when a driver hit her head on. Four-year-old grandson Timmy was in the back seat, and Erna considers it nothing short of a miracle that they survived. We hope that the recovery is shorter than she expects and that she can return to work at Organic Valley.

Frank and Darlene Martalock spent Saturday in Tomah, first attending the program in support of those dealing with cancer. Their son Jeff shared his story dealing with the big “C” the past five years. Later they gathered at Jeff and Lynn’s home andcelebrated granddaughter Olivia’s 11th birthday. Other family members joined in the celebration, making it a day to remember.

Bob, Barb and Jenna Heinz attended services and the “kids’ church” program at St. Matthew’s in rural Warrens on Sunday, and later they had lunch with Rick and Kristi Heinz in honor of Mother’s Day.

Bob and I were part of the large crowd that attended the spring pops concert at Royall on Friday night. The high school chorus and band displayed lots of talent.

And that’s it for May 15, 2017.
