It’s the first day of spring 2017. Sheets are hung on the clothesline, and a breeze will help them dry. There is a new song by a bird that we love to hear every spring. My husband Bob painted some birdhouses this winter, and now they are up and waiting for our bluebirds and Jenny wren to return. Migration: Who can understand it?We enjoy the seasons as they change.

Great-grandsons Cole and Connor Sharpe have their birthdays in March, and they and their family came to our house on Saturday to celebrate with a turkey dinner. Television brought lots of basketball to enjoy and lots of cheering for the Wisconsin Badgers, who gave us a nail-biting win.

Not much is going on at the Martalock home, as they entertained the flu for most of the week. By Saturday, they were able to attend the annual ice-skating show at Tomah, and as of today, they are busy canning maple syrup.

Grandson Josh Ferries of Prairie du Chien, Wis., stopped by for a visit with his grandma Hazel Pasch on Tuesday.

On Saturday, Hazel and her sister Joyce Sturtz attended a bridal shower for Sarah Witt, and later they visited with Edith Witt at the Morrow Home in Sparta.

Our sympathy to the family of Charlie Rieck. He continued caring for the farm his parents once owned, planting and harvesting with his John Deere tractors. He loved farming and hunting and much more. Bob and I and Hazel Pasch attended his visitation Friday night at St. John’s in Kendall.

Bob and I are members of the Kendall Lions Club, he for 55 years and I much later. On Saturday night, March 25, the Lions will hold their 49th auction, now called the Lions Fund Fest, at the Kendal Community Hall. There will be food, raffles and many great articles to buy.

The Lions’ motto, “we serve,” is exactly what this club stands for. It has donated many dollars to help the Village of Kendall, the schools, and a camp for children with disabilities, plus has collected eyeglasses and so much more. The club has chosen its Citizen of the Year, and that person will be honored on Saturday at 7 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. Perhaps we’ll see some of you there.

And that’s it for March 20, 2017.
