Royall wrestlers capture second straight league title

By NATE BEIER | For the County Line

The goal was to capture another Scenic Bluffs Conference title, and as of last week, that goal was achieved, as Royall defeated Cashton 54–15 to lock up a second straight championship.

The Panthers finish the conference dual season 5–0 for the second straight season and won their seventh Scenic Bluffs Conference title overall.

Royall also managed to go 2–0 in nonconference duals, defeating Black River Falls and De Soto, bringing its overall record to 7–0 on the season.

Royall 54, Cashton 15

Luke Wohlrab won by fall in 23 seconds over Austin Culpitt at 220, and Mason McCluskey pinned Zach Mlsna at 285. Also, Nolan McKittrick won by pin at 106, plus Ethan Palamaruk earned 6 team points after a pin.

Cashton’s Colin O’Neil put the Eagles on the board with a pin against Caeden Dobbratz at 138. But Royall led the dual 36–6 at this point, and a comeback by the home team seemed unlikely with five matches to go.

Harley Leverenz defeated Kenneth Letterly by fall, sealing the win for the Panthers. Matthew Harter defeated Royall’s Josh Palamaruk9–4, and Tristan Grant topped Royall’s Dean Sugden by fall. Royall won the final two matches: Ashton Roach and Jameson Bender both claimed wins by pin.

Royall 72, Necedah 4

Only four matches were wrestled when Royall faced Necedah on Jan. 23, and the Panthers claimed three of the four wins of those matches. However, Royall claimed nine forfeits in the win as well.

Harley Leverenz won at 138 with a fall against Mason Wollschlager in the first period. Josh Palamaruk defeated Shayne Sparby with a second-period pin, and Dean Sugden won with a second-period pin at 152.

Necedah’s Lane Meltesen beat Ashton Roach 15–5 to score 4 team points.

Royall 60, De Soto 17

On Jan. 21, Royall used its program numbers to hand De Soto a loss. The Pirates won three of the five matches wrestled, but Royall scored 48 points on forfeits.

Evan Palamaruk won by fall at 170, and Jameson Bender earneda pin in the opening minute of the 182 match. Also, Cezar Garcia defeated Mason McCluskey at 220 by fall, and De Soto heavyweight Trevor Rehbahn pinned Tristan Day in the opening period.

The final match of the night pitted Josh Palamaruk against Aiden Brosinski, who won by technical fall, 18–2.

Royall wrestlers win Hillsboro invite

Team success at tournaments has been hard to come by for the Royall wrestling team, but the Panthers captured the top spot at Hillsboro’s invite on Jan. 25 with five bracket championships and five runners-up.

Royall scored 210 team points, topping second-place Auburndale (125) and third-place Dodgeville (121). Hillsboro was fourth with 108.5 points.

At 106, Nolan McKittrick pinned his way to another title. At 145, Josh Palamaruk claimed five victories, all by fall, to take first. Dean Sugden took first at 152 with a pair of pins, and Jameson Bender was first at 170 with four pins. Luke Wohlrab was 3–0 with two pins and a major decision, taking first at 195.

Also, these Royall wrestlers took second: Michael Lincoln at 113, Caeden Dobbratz at 132, Harley Leverenz at 138, Ashton Roach at 160, and Mason McCluskey at 220.

Evan Palamaruk was third at 182; Tristen Day, fourth at 285; and Ethan Palamaruk, fifth at 126.

At Independence/Gilmanton

Royall finished fourth at last weekend’s Indee Invite in Independence. The Panthers scored 150 team points. Stanley Boyd/Owen Withee won the meet with 231 points.

Nolan McKittrick improved to 29–3 on the season after winning the Indee Invite at 106 on Saturday. He won all three matches by fall.

Luke Wohlrab (21–7) was second at 195. He had pinned his way to the final, where he lost by fall to G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro’s Bryce Burns in the first period.

Harley Leverenz (14–10) took third at 138, winning his third-place match 5-4 over Whitehall’s Connor Gleeson.

Ashton Roach (20–10) pinned Blair-Taylor’s Noah Shepherd in the opening minute of the third-place match. Roach was 3–1 on the day.

Josh Palamaruk (19–14) was fourth at 152, and Jameson Bender (19–6) was fifth at 170. Also, Dean Sugden (9–8) was sixth at 152, Evan Palamaruk (8–13) was sixth at 182, and Mason McCluskey (17–12) was sixth at 220.
